    Q:
How to ensure the proper functioning of spark plug wires? Posted by Customer
    A:
To ensure the proper functioning of spark plug wires, they should be regularly inspected at recommended intervals and whenever new spark plugs are installed in the engine. V6 engines have spark plug wires that go from the spark plugs to an ignition coil assembly, while V8s use a separate coil for each cylinder connected by short plug wires to its respective plug. To start, visually inspect the wires while the engine is running in a dimly lit, well-ventilated environment. Look closely at every wire to see if there is any arcing or sparking between points where it is damaged. Presence of arcing indicates the wire is broken and it should be replaced. Shut the engine off and disconnect one plug wire from one spark plug by turning and pulling gently on the rubber boot without touching any moving parts of the engine. Check inside the boot for corrosion which looks like white crusty powder. After screwing back the wire into its place around a spark plug tightly enough, wipe its entire length using a piece of cloth, inspect it for damage and prevent conductor breakage resulting from too much flexing of it. Do this in a similar way for V6 engines removing their wires from coils assembly checking for corrosion and having them securely fitted again. These procedures must also be repeated on other wires making sure that they are solidly attached both ends when latched onto each other properly. If you have to buy another set, make sure to get one specifically made for your car's engine model; replace them individually so as not to confuse cylinder firing order patterns with other firing orders.

    Q:
What should you do if replacement of spark plug wires is necessary for the 2009 Chevrolet Avalanche? Posted by Customer
    A:
If replacement is necessary, obtain a new set tailored to your engine model, and replace the wires one at a time to avoid firing order mix-ups. Pay close attention to the wire routing, and on V6 engines, release the ignition wire loom clamps to swap the wires before securing the clamps onto the new wires.
