    Q:
How should the heads of the valves be examined and what steps should be taken if pitting or burning is present on Buick Skylark? Posted by Customer
    A:
Heads of the valves should also be inspected for pitting and burning especially on the exhaust valves and also the valve seatings. If pitting is small, it can be rectified by rubbing the seats and valves together by coarse and then fine grinding paste. To grind the valves, one should put some carborundum paste on the seat face and using a suction grinder on the valve head, that should be rotated in semi-rotary mode and the valve lifted occasionally to spread the paste. Once a flat and impending casting luster is attained to both surfaces, wash off the paste and reinforce the procedure using fine carborundum paste and turn and lift the valve accordingly. It can be made easier with a light spring under the valve head. Grinding is said to be completed when a uniform non-directional smooth light grey matte surface is achieved. If there is severe pitting or burning, the valve must be taken to a dealer and the seat recut; if the refacing leads to a reduction of valve head margin width beyond the limits that are set, the valve will have to be replaced. Last of all, scrapped all carbon from the valve head and stem, cleaned the ports and valve guides of any grindings and cleaned the valves and seats with a damp rag followed by a dry rag and ended with an air line if available to ensure the parts are sightly clear.

    Q:
What are the steps involved in valve reconditioning procedures on Buick Century? Posted by Customer
    A:
Valve resurfacing involves a sequence of activities that are different for various engine types. First, remove the cylinder head and place it on a clean, well-lit work surface. Eliminate valve seals from intake valve guides and discard them. Get rid of the valves and number them for reinstallation purposes. Make sure to cleanse all carbon deposits from combustion chambers, piston crowns and valves with a soft wire brush being careful not to rasp against valve seats or faces. Using the right spring compressor for valves, compress the valve spring until it springs off its cap keys. Free it in order to get rid of this cap. Cleaning carbon and gum deposits out of valve guide bores may be done using Reamer J-8101. The pits or damages on the valve faces as well as seat require attention therefore reface them at 45° angle if necessary. When there is excessive clearance with either 0.006 or 0.010 reamers ,ream out valve guides lightly lap valves into seats with fine grinding compound , ensuring smooth and true surfaces Test each one using Prussian blue coated on the face of each other to see who is more concentrically aligned Remove burrs from stem ends, polish stems with crocus cloth, lubricate stems and guides with clean engine oil before putting back Install new intake seals (no exhaust seal needed). Use an installer to locate these seals above guides correctly Install such springs so that tightly wound coil is located next to cylinder head (on 8-350 exhale ones you can install any end up) Pressurize springs then return caps afterwards assembling cylinder heads again Start by taking off rocker arm nuts balls arms use a compressor for removing keepers caps other relevant pieces when dealing Chevrolet engines For Pontiac motors remove rocker arms employing a compressor which removes locks caps among others in addition to this Restore Oldsmobile engines have remover key oil seals followed by their respective valves New oil seals are put over stems by means of an appropriate tool for the purpose Narrow valve seats to specified width and if necessary ream out guide bores for oversize valves when reconditioning the valves as well as valve seats This might be carbon deposits narrowing or widening a valve seat stem height and clearance etcetera assess wear, damage or any other problems from different parts. Valving conditions require scrutinizing for various components such as wear, damages, problems and others that may arise hence follow manufacturer's guidelines on servicing valves Measure correctly the height of each stem after proper placement of keys by tapping it down. Take all valves' measurements to ensure correct stem heights, replacing those ones that went too short.

    Q:
Is servicing valves, valve seats, and valve guides best handled by a professional on Pontiac Fiero? Posted by Customer
    A:
This is especially so because the job involves the valves, valve seats, and valve guides; and because the tools and equipment used need specialized attention. An individual who is at home can uninstall remove and dismantle each head, initiate cleaning and assessment, reassemble and transport the head(s) to a dealer service department or an automotive machine shop for actual valve working. The service department or machine shop will dismantle the valves and springs with possibility of reconditioning or replacing the valves and valve seats, recondition the valve guides, check and replace the valve springs, spring retainers and keepers if necessary, replace the valve seals with new ones, put the valves and spring back together so that the installed valve spring height is as required. also the cylinder head gasket surface to be refinished in case it is warped. As soon as the valve job is done the head becomes as good as new; but before the head is put back on, it must be cleaned again to remove any metal chips as well as abrasive grit work may have left while doing the valve service or the resurfacing of the head as the case may be, using compressed air if at all available to blow out all oil holes and passages.

    Q:
Is servicing valves, valve seats, and valve guides best handled by a professional on Pontiac Firebird? Posted by Customer
    A:
Because of the challenge involved and the kind of equipment needed to work on the valves, the valve seats, and the valve guides it is advisable to engage the services of a professional. Home mechanic can take off and unbolt the head, perform rudimentary thorough washing and examination of the head and then he/she can present it to a dealer service department, or to a professional automotive machine shop for the actual valve servicing. The service department or the machine shop will have to have to strip the valves and springs, recondition or replace according to the need, inspect and replace the valve springs as contained in the specification, also replace the retainers, rotators and keepers if need be, replace the valve seals, reassemble the part and finally correctly set the installed spring height. Further, Cylinder head gasket surface will be grind as well if it is warped. That is always the case after performing the valve job, and the head will be almost as good as new. It should be washed before being placed in the head on the engine so as to purge it of any metal chips and sand that may be left behind during the service or after resurfacing. Compressed air should be utilised, if available, to blow out all oil holes and passages.

    Q:
How should the valves and seats be cleaned after grinding for the 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove all carbon from the valve head and stem, ensuring that no grinding compound remains in the ports or valve guides. Clean the valves and seats with a solvent-soaked rag, followed by a clean rag, and if possible, use an air line to blow out any remaining debris from the valves, guides, and ports.
