    Q:
How do you remove the automatic transaxle on Chevrolet Equinox? Posted by Customer
    A:
To complete the removal of the transaxle, one has to first remove the battery and the battery tray after which the shift cable bracket has to be removed and the shift cable disconnected. In the next step, provide loose wiring connection to the transaxle and the transfer case and this include ground wires, transaxle range switch, speed sensor and control module. Move the fuel line retainer and remove the vent tubes. Wiring should be adopted as the means of fixing the radiator, fan module, and condenser onto the frame structure. Propose an engine support stand and attach hooks to the lifting lugs on top of the engine. Take out the top two transaxle to engine bolts: next with the support of the engine and the transaxle, unbolt the driver side transaxle mount. Untighten the front wheel lug nuts and the driveaxle/ hub nuts, lift the vehicle and then support it on the jack stands. Pull out the front wheels with their fenders, twist out the transaxle drain plug and dispose of the used fluid, take off the old pinch bolt from the lower steering shaft. Loosen the steering shaft from the steering gear and outer tie rod ends and the lower ball joints from the steering knuckles and the stabilizer bar links from the front stabilizer bar. Lower the unit by completely detaching the lower air deflector of the front bumper cover, and disconnect the lines of transaxle fluid cooler, after which the holes must be sealed in order to have no access to dust or debris. For 3.4L models the transaxle-to-engine brace has to be erased; for 3.6L models, the flywheel inspection cover also has to be erased, making the matchmarks on the torque converter and flywheel. Take out all the torque converter bolts, disconnect the front and rear engine mount, and drive axles and take out the intermediate shaft. For AWD models, unscrew the driveshaft and transfer case mounting bracket, for 3.6L AWD models also unscrew the transfer case. Lift off the subframe and place some form of jack under the transaxle for this lift if there is one, then assure that it is secured by using safety chains or straps where necessary. Undo the lower most transaxle to engine bolts, then pull the transaxle away from the engine and lower it gently on the ground. To reinstall, reverse all the steps to remove just be sure that the torque converter fits well with the transaxle fluid pump inner gear, the steering shaft pinch bolt, use new one if the old one is damaged, and the driveplate to torque converter should have all the nuts tightened before being secured. Torque all the driveplate-to-torque converter bolts and the transaxle mounting bolts to factory recommended value, dispose the damaged O rings and install new ones at the subframe and tighten the wheel lug nuts.
