This switch ensures the vehicle only starts when the clutch pedal is fully depressed. Mounted on the clutch pedal bracket, it's activated by a plastic shaft. To remove, disconnect the electrical coupler and the switch actuating shaft. For installation, attach the switch to the bracket, align the actuating shaft with the pedal arm hole, and connect the electrical coupler. No adjustments are needed as the switch is self-aligning.

Firmly apply both the parking brake and the regular brakes. If the engine starts, be ready to turn off the ignition promptly. Take these precautions because the vehicle could move without warning and possibly cause personal injury or property damage. On automatic transaxle vehicles, try to start the engine in each gear. The engine should start only in Park or Neutral due to the Neutral Safety Switch. On manual transaxle vehicles, place the shift lever in Neutral, push the clutch halfway and try to start. The engine should start only when the clutch is fully depressed because of the Neutral Safety Switch.

Turn the shift shaft two positions from PARK to NEUTRAL, insert a 3/32 in. (2mm) drill bit into the service adjustment hole in the switch, and slowly turn the switch until the drill drops into the switch to a depth of 9/64 in. (3mm).

After adjusting the neutral safety switch, check to ensure the car will only start in NEUTRAL or PARK.

To install, position the gear shift lever in NEUTRAL, install the switch into the column by inserting the switch carrier tang into the shift tube slot and tighten the retaining screws, move the gear shift lever out of NEUTRAL to the LOW extreme position to shear the switch pin, check operation of switch to verify that the engine will only start in PARK or NEUTRAL, and adjust the switch by positioning the gear shift lever in NEUTRAL, loosening the 2 retaining screws, rotating the switch slightly on the column until the NEUTRAL hole in the back of the switch freely admits a No. 41 (3/32 in.) drill bit to the depth of 3/s in. (9mm), and then tightening the retaining nut.

Detach the vacuum hose, unplug the electrical connector, and remove the mounting screws. For 3.4L models, the retaining bracket and bolt must be removed before pulling it straight up, while for 1995 and later 3800 engines, retaining clips must be disengaged.

Install the nut that connects the lever to the transaxle shaft and attach the cable assembly to the pivot pin.

Check the dark blue wire for an open.

Reconnect the negative battery cable and verify that the engine starts only in Neutral or Park.

To replace the MAT sensor, disconnect the wire harness and unscrew the sensor, then reverse the removal process for installation.

The engine should crank only with the clutch pedal fully depressed.
