    Q:
How to remove and install shock absorbers on Cadillac ElDorado and Fleetwood? Posted by Customer
    A:
Start by raising and safely supporting the vehicle, then removing the wheel and tire assembly and the trunk side cover to remove and install the shock absorbers on Deville and Fleetwood models. Disconnect the electronic level control airline from the strut, making sure to clean the connector and surrounding area before squeezing the spring clip to release the connector. If equipped with Computer Command Ride, detach the electrical connector; then go ahead to remove the strut tower mounting nuts from inside the trunk. Remove the bolts, washers and nuts from knuckle and stabilizer bar bracket in order to free up the strut. When installing strut ensure wiring is upright and centered on strut mount if equipped with Computer Command Ride. Strut tower mounting nuts tightened to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) and strut-to-knuckle nuts tightened to 140 ft. lbs. (190 Nm). Lubricate air line O-rings with lubricant, then push air line into fitting while connecting it fully into housing opening wetting rings of fitted up pipe fastener. Put back electrical connector in case of installation of computer command ride system in car model being repaired in this very moment before you mount a rack or pinion gear device which you have already finished doing by now; finally set up a wheel on a hub interfaced with brake booster installed earlier than lowering down your car when rear wheel alignment has been checked again for fulfillment of set norms of technical characteristics for these cars having self-leveling suspension systems in them (only for certain years). For 1990-92 Eldorado & Seville Models- raise & safely support vehicle, remove wheel & tire assembly, detach shock absorber electrical connector from rear suspension support(4.6L engine), support lower control arm with suitable jack to relieve spring load, remove shock absorber lower mounting nut&bolt, detach electrical connector from top of shock absorber(4 .9L engine), disconnect the air line from the shock absorber, making sure to clean connector and surrounding area, rotate the spring clip for releasing the connector lock. Remove upper mounting nut; retainer and insulator then compress shock absorber by hand and remove it through upper control arm. When installing shock absorbers, inspect upper and lower insulators for damage and replace as necessary. Position shock absorber on suspension support moisten air line O-rings push air line and connector fully into fitting. If equipped attach electrical connector, tighten upper shock absorber nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm) and lower shock absorber nut to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm). Install wheel and tire assembly then lower vehicle finally. For 1993-98 Eldorado & Seville Models- raise & safely support vehicle, remove wheel & tire assembly, disconnect electronic level control height sensor link if removing left strut; install two lug nuts to hold rotor on hub & bearing assembly, remove mounting bolt at strut if equipped with stabilizer bar; remove rear brake caliper loosening parking brake cable first that requires removing cable support bracket after you suspend caliper in such a way so it would not hang down from its housing more than needed during this process as well. Loosen but do not remove knuckle pivot bolt at outer end of control arm; support outer end of control arm with suitable jack or jackstand if necessary. If equipped with Computer Command Ride detach electrical connector at top of strut; disconnect air line from strut ensuring cleaning connector including surrounding area as well as rotating spring clip to release connector lock. Remove upper strut rod cap; mounting nut, retainer, insulator then slowly lower jack or remove jackstand in order relief spring pressure. Compress strut by hand then rotate strut & knuckle assembly outwardly for removal from knuckle-installed latterly when putting back steering system gears previously assembled just like undercarriage booster which you've already done before that by now; lastly perform putting wheel onto hub interfaced with a differential gear set having its rear wheel alignment checked once again meeting all the necessary manufacturer's specifications for these vehicles which incorporate this unit as part of their suspension system (for specific occurring years only). When installing shock absorbers, inspect upper and lower insulators for damage, and position strut fully in knuckle with tang on strut bottomed in knuckle slot. Install knuckle pinch bolt (tighten it), install lower insulator on strut, position strut rod in suspension support, then install upper strut insulator; retainer and nut. Lubricate air line O-rings with lubricant; rotate spring retainer to engaged position before pushing air line into fitting until it is fully locked up. For computer command ride only, attach electrical connector if any & reinstall wheel and tire assembly, later lower vehicle accordingly.
