The oxygen sensor in an auto's exhaust system interacts with the oxygen to generate a voltage output showing how much of this gas is left in the exhaust. The PCM uses this feedback signal to compute the necessary fuel injector pulse width and control A/F ratio. For minimum emissions and fuel economy, the best ratio comprises 14.7 parts of air to 1 part of fuel. To ascertain whether or not it is working properly, the post-converter oxygen sensor monitors the efficiency of the catalytic converter.
