    Q:
How do you replace the tie rod end and ensure proper alignment during reinstallation on Buick Regal? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the tie rod end, it is necessary to slightly unscrew the adjuster sleeve nuts and bolts, and put the marks, that will be helpful for the assembly process, on the inner and outer thread of the tie rod end. After that, one has to unscrew a cotter pin from the tie rod stud, and loosen, and then unbolt the tie rod locknut before disconnecting the tie rod from the knuckle, and unscrewing it from the sleeve. Lift and fix the vehicle firmly, then slacken and unscrew the tie rod stud nut and the cotter pin and use ball joint remover tool for the tapered type. Pull and unthread the tie rod from the adjusting sleeve and it is important to record the number of turns for reassembling. In a situation where additional force is required to remove the nuts and bolts, then, they should be replaced. For installation, the threads have to be cleaned and torque specifications are applied on the steering arm-to-tie rod end nut, the tie rod clamp nuts and the tie rod-to-intermediate nut and finally the alignment has to be checked and if misaligned has to be readjusted. When removing the Pitman arm for the Pitman arm, we use special pullers to unscrew the center link and then to remove the stopped up Pitman arm from the steering box shaft we took a mark of relationship to align it properly each time it is re-fixed. After installing a new arm, tighten new nut to the required torque. As to the idler arm, lift the car, unbolt it from the frame and center link, the threaded support has to be shifted in the proper position to fit the Pitman arm. When fixing the idler arm, one should fit it to the centre link and tighten the nut and if needed fit the cotter pin. For the center link, lift the car, on the output, remove the ball stud nut from Pitman arm and disconnect the tie-rod inner ends, in case of tightness use pullers. All damaged seals should be replaced then the centre link fitted onto the idler arm and Pitman arm while adjusting the respective nuts to the required torque setting. Last, replace the inner tie rod ends, tighten the nuts in accordance with the manufacturer's instruction and use new cotter pins to retain them, check toe-in on a car at a shop.
