    Q:
How to remove and reinstall the oil pan in 2.3L four cylinder engine on Chevrolet Beretta? Posted by Customer
    A:
The following procedure is based on the assumption the engine is in place in the vehicle. If its been removed, simply unbolt the oil pan and detach it from the block. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery, then drain the oil. Remove the lower splash shield. Detach the lower bellhousing cover. Unbolt the exhaust manifold brace. Remove the radiator outlet pipe-to-oil pan bolt. On manual transaxle equipped models, remove the transaxle-to-oil pan nut and stud with a 7 mm socket. Gently pry the spacer out from between the oil pan and transaxle. Remove the oil pan-to-transaxle bolt. Remove the oil pan mounting bolts. Carefully separate the pan from the block. Don't pry between the block and pan or damage to the sealing surfaces may result and oil leaks may develop. The Crankshaft may have to be rotated to gain clearance for oil pan removal. If you need to get at the crankshaft or other lower end components, remove the oil pan baffle. Clean the sealing surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone. Make sure the bolt holes in the block are clean. The gasket should be checked carefully and replaced with a new one if damage is noted. Minor imperfections can be repaired with ATV sealant. Use only enough sealant to restore the gasket to its original size and shape. Excess sealant may cause part misalignment and oil leaks. Reinstall the oil pan baffle, if removed. With the gasket in position, carefully hold the pan against the block and install the bolts finger tight. Tighten the bolts. Start at the center of the pan and work out toward the ends in a spiral pattern. Note that the bolts are not all tightened to the same torque figure. The remaining steps are the reverse of removal. Don't forget to refill the engine with oil before starting it. Start the engine and check carefully for oil leaks at the oil pan.

    Q:
How to remove and reinstall the oil pan in 2.0L/2.2L four cylinder overhead valve engine on Chevrolet Beretta? Posted by Customer
    A:
Warm up the engine, then drain the oil and remove the oil filter. Detach the cable from the negative battery terminal. Caution: On models equipped with the Delco Loc II audio system, be sure the lockout feature is turned off before performing any procedure that requires disconnecting the battery. Raise the vehicle and securely support it on jackstands. Remove the exhaust pipe shield. On air-conditioned models, remove the air conditioner brace at the starter and compressor bracket. Remove the starter and bracket. Remove the lower bellhousing cover. On air-conditioned models, remove the air conditioner brace. Remove the four right support bolts. Lower the support slightly to gain clearance for oil pan removal. Remove the oil filter extension (automatic transaxle equipped models only). Remove the bolts and nuts securing the oil pan to the engine block. Tap on the pan with a soft-face hammer to break the gasket seal, then detach the oil pan from the engine. Using a gasket scraper, remove all traces of the old gasket or sealant from the engine block and oil pan. Make sure the threaded bolt holes in the block are clean. Wash the oil pan with solvent and dry it thoroughly. Check the gasket flanges for distortion, particularly around the bolt holes. If necessary, place the pan on a block of wood and use a hammer to flatten and restore the gasket surfaces. Clean the mating surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone. Place a 2 mm diameter bead of RTV sealant on the oil pan-to-block sealing flanges and the oil pan-to-front cover surface. Apply a thin coat of RTV sealant to the ends of the rear oil pan seal down to the ears. Press the oil pan seal into position. Carefully place the oil pan against the block. Install the bolts/nuts and tighten them in 1/4-turn increments. Start with the bolts closest to the center of the pan and work out in a spiral pattern. Don't overtighten them or leakage may occur. Reinstall components removed for access to the oil pan. Add oil and install a new filter, run the engine, and check for oil leaks.

    Q:
How to remove and reinstall the oil pan in V6 engine on Chevrolet Beretta? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Caution: On models equipped with the Delco Loc II audio system, be sure the lockout feature is turned off before performing any procedure which requires disconnecting the battery. Raise the front of the vehicle and place it securely on jackstands. Apply the parking brake and block the rear wheels to keep it from rolling off the stands. Remove the lower splash pan and drain the engine oil. Remove the lower flywheel/driveplate cover. Remove the starter. Remove the serpentine drivebelt. Loosen, but do not remove, the upper air conditioning compressor bolts (if equipped). Remove the right front wheel. Also remove the right side splash shields. Support the engine from above with a hoist or an engine support fixture, then detach the engine mount strut from the suspension support. If equipped, remove the right front ABS wheel speed sensor harness from the right suspension support. Separate the right front balljoint from the steering knuckle, detach the right side stabilizer bar link from the control arm, then remove the right side suspension support. Remove the air conditioning compressor bolts, position compressor aside and support with a piece of wire. Remove the bolts and nuts, then carefully separate the oil pan from the block. Don't pry between the block and the pan or damage to the sealing surfaces could occur and oil leaks may develop. Instead, tap the pan with a soft-face hammer to break the gasket seal. Clean the pan with solvent and remove all old sealant and gasket material from the block and pan mating surfaces. Clean the mating surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone and make sure the bolt holes in the block are clear. Check the oil pan flange for distortion, particularly around the bolt holes. If necessary, place the pan on a block of wood and use a hammer to flatten and restore the gasket surface. Always use a new gasket whenever the oil pan is installed. Place the oil pan in position on the block and install the nuts/bolts. After the fasteners are installed, tighten them. Starting at the center, follow a criss-cross pattern and work up to the final torque in three steps. The remaining steps are the reverse of the removal procedure. Refill the engine with oil, run it until normal operating temperature is reached and check for leaks.

    Q:
How to remove and install an oil pan in V8 engine on Oldsmobile Cutlass? Posted by Customer
    A:
Having instilled the engine into a vehicle, follow the procedures of How to Start, by removing the negative BAT cable and air cleaner assembly. Then, remove the distributor cap in order to avoid damaging it when lifting the engine and then unbolt the radiator shroud from the radiator support and hook it on the cooling fan. Lift the vehicle and place it on jack stands; further, dismantle the oil dipstick and dipstick tube. Siphon the engine oil and flush the engine and then remove the exhaust crossover pipe at the exhaust manifold flanges and drop the exhaust pipes and hold them with wire on the frame. In the case that the vehicle has automatic transmission, then the first parts to be taken off include the converter underpan, starter and the flywheel cover. Turn the engine counterclockwise with a bolt at the middle of the torsional damper so that the favourite timing mark points to the number 1 cylinder which means that the engine is now at top dead centre, although this will give some clearance at the front of the oil pan. Loosen and take out the through bolt of every engine mount followed by lifting the engine with the aid of an engine hoist or cherry picker to enable you to slide the oil pan away from the cross-member. Another procedure rely on the use of a floor jack with a piece of wood placed underneath the oil pan to avoid any scratching. Lift the engine further until wood blocks can be wedged in between the frame front crossmember and the engine block; reference should be made to clearance round the engine, especially with distributor and cooling fan. Place the engine on the wooden blocks such that it is well balanced and then remove the oil pan bolts, and if necessary the heads as well, considering the sizes and positions. Lower the rear of the oil pan down and wiggle the front free of the crossmember; use a rubber mallet if you need to apply serious amounts of force. Before installation the gasket sealing surfaces must be free from sealer and gasket materials, clean them properly. Place the new side gaskets to the engine block, be sure that the bolt holes align then spread a thin layer of sealer on the gaskets. Set the front and rear seals into the sealer and jam the ends of these to the side gaskets ends. Place the pan in the required position and fit all bolts loosely up to the position when they can be tightened using fingers, and then tighten the end bolts. Lower the engine onto its mounts and install the through bolts tightening them to the standard torque. Work in reverse, adding the proper grade and amount of oil, turn on the engine, and you are required to check if there is any leakage. If the engine has been pulled out from the vehicle, then most of the steps pertaining to above will not come into the picture and the pan will simply bolted and can be lifted off from the engine block in the process discussed earlier, while the installation process will involve cleaning and sealing steps described above.

    Q:
How do you remove and reinstall an oil pan in 2.5L four cylinder engine on Pontiac Grand Prix? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before disposing the oil pan it is necessary to heat up the engine, to drain the oil, and to delete the oil filter. Pull the cable out of the negative terminal, while making sure that if the Theftlock feature is present in the audio system, it has been turned off. Then, drain out the coolant, unbolt the engine torque strut, unbolt the coolant reservoir, unscrew the air cleaner assembly, disconnect the air inlet tube and reach the drivebelt and remove it. Remove the dipstick tube, put the car on stands and place a floor jack on the front transaxle and wooden plank on the back of the engine. In the case of air-conditioned models, free the air-conditioner from brackets but do not unplug the hoses. Go on to take/undo the starter, lower bell housing cover, and the engine wiring harness retaining screws/removal of screws under the oil pan. There is no splash pan, but take off the bolts and nuts of front engine mount bracket, and transaxle mount nuts, then lift the engine and transaxle assembly up about 2 inches. Take off the front engine mount and bracket, free the frame bolts and the bolts and nuts holding the oil pan to the engine block. This gasket has a special seal that requires the pan to be tapped with a soft-face hammer before pulling it off-the other type of gasket can simply be pulled off without prying. After that clean the engine block and oil pan blunt by removing all the old sealant and make sure that the threaded bolt holes are free from it. For installation examine the sealing flanges for undue stress and use a punch to flatten if the case so requires. Scrub down the mating surfaces and then apply RTV sealant in a steady, unbroken line along the sealing flanges and front protective cover face, do not overdo the application of the sealant. It is necessary to put a thin layer of RTV sealant on the ends of the rear oil pan seal and then fit the oil pan on the block. When installing the bolts, begin from the center then progress in a circular fashion round the outermost edge to prevent applying lots of pressure. Last of all replace any component that may have been shifted for access, apply oil on any component that required it, fit the new filter, start the engine and inspect for any sign of leakage.
