    Q:
How do you remove the Buick LaCrosse steering gear? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the 2009 and earlier model rack and pinion, start by parking the vehicle with the wheels straight ahead and loosening the front wheel lug nuts. Then, raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands before removing both front wheels. Next, remove the power steering fluid from the reservoir and disconnect the heat shield. Disconnect the intermediate shaft bolt, stabilizer links, and tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles. Support the rear part of the subframe with a floor jack and remove the two rear subframe mounting bolts. Slowly lower the subframe with the floor jack to remove the rack and pinion from the left side of the vehicle, ensuring the input shaft and shaft coupler separate without binding. Detach any wiring harnesses or hoses that may come under tension and place a drain pan under the rack and pinion. Detach the power steering pressure and return lines using a flare-nut wrench and cap all openings. Finally, remove the rack and pinion mounting fasteners. The installation process is the reverse of removal, with additional steps such as raising the subframe with a floor jack, reattaching wiring harnesses and brackets, using new fasteners, filling the power steering pump with fluid, and checking for proper operation and leaks. For the 2010 and later models, the removal process is similar but includes additional steps such as marking the relationship of the intermediate shaft to the rack and pinion input shaft, removing the lower intermediate shaft pinch bolt, detaching the control arm ball joints, removing the heat shield, and removing the front section of the exhaust system. The installation process for these models is also similar, with the addition of steps such as removing the stabilizer bar, discarding the old fasteners, and guiding the rack and pinion out from the left wheel opening.
