    Q:
What are the steps involved in removing and reinstalling a cylinder head in V6 engine on Pontiac Firebird? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and raise the vehicle securely on jackstands. Locate the engine block drain plugs at the rear of the motor mounts, remove them, and drain the block. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold and remove the oil dipstick tube assembly from the engine side. Remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle, then take out the intake manifold and the exhaust manifold. Without disconnecting the hoses, remove the power steering pump and its bracket from the cylinder head, and do the same for the air conditioning compressor and its bracket without disconnecting the refrigerant lines. Remove the coolant temperature sending unit from the front of the cylinder head, loosen the rocker arm nuts to allow for pushrod removal, and then take out the pushrods, ensuring they are stored separately for reinstallation. Loosen the head bolts in the opposite sequence of tightening, then remove the cylinder head by breaking the gasket seal with a bar inserted into one of the exhaust ports. Ensure the gasket surfaces of both the head and engine block are clean and free of nicks and scratches, and that the threads in the block and on the head bolts are clean. Position the gasket over the locating dowels with the note "This Side Up" visible, then place the cylinder head over the gasket. Coat the cylinder head bolts with an appropriate thread sealer, install them, and tighten in the proper sequence to the specified torque, working up to the final torque in three steps. Install the pushrods, ensuring the lower ends are in the lifter seats, place the rocker arm ends over the pushrods, and loosely install the rocker arm nuts. The remaining installation steps are the reverse of removal, and before installing the rocker arm covers, adjust the valve lash. For the right side, repeat the initial steps of disconnecting the negative battery terminal, locating and draining the engine block, disconnecting the exhaust pipe, and lowering the vehicle. Remove the intake manifold, alternator, and its bracket, as well as the lifting eye from the rear of the head if replacing it. Remove the exhaust manifold, loosen the rocker arm nuts to remove the pushrods, and loosen the head bolts in the opposite sequence of tightening. Remove the cylinder head by breaking the gasket seal with a bar inserted into one of the exhaust ports, and follow the installation steps outlined previously.
