To remove the steering column, start by parking the vehicle with the wheels pointing straight ahead and disconnecting the battery's negative terminal cable. Ensure that the steering column is locked and disable the airbag system. Then, remove the steering column covers, steering wheel, airbag clockspring, insulating panel below the dash, knee bolster, and knee bolster support. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the steering column switches and remove the wiring harness. Take off the steering column protective pad and mark the relationship of the steering column shaft to the intermediate shaft coupler before removing the pinch bolt. Check for any remaining electrical connectors or wiring harnesses that may interfere with removal. Carefully guide the column out from the instrument panel and, if replacing the steering column, remove any components that will be used on the replacement column. To install the steering column, guide it into position and connect the steering shaft with the intermediate shaft coupler, aligning the marks made during removal. Install the mounting fasteners, tighten the bolts and nuts to the specified torque, and secure the new intermediate shaft coupler pinch-bolt. The remaining steps of installation are the reverse of removal.
