Saturn Vue Canister Purge Valves Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How Does the Evaporative Emissions Control System,Canister Purge Valves and Canister Work and How Is It Diagnosed and Repaired on Saturn Vue?
A: The Evaporative Emissions Control (EVAP) system is employed to block, contain, and recirculate fuel system evaporative emissions, the vapor from which contains unburned hydrocarbons. During warm weather, fuel vapors in the tank are directed to the fuel vapor vent valve and the fuel vapor control valve to the EVAP canister where they are stored for some time until the vehicle is run. When conditions are optimal, the PCM commands the CPP to open the canister purge valve, and the naturally occurring draw through the MAF, the vapors are drawn in the intake manifold and mixed with incoming air and burned in the combustion chambers. The EVAP canister is installed under the automobile near the fuel tank and stores activated charcoal for the vapor; it is a non-serviceable component. As seen are the canister filter that warrants that the dirt does not get into the system, the canister vent shut valve that allows fresh air during purging and the fuel tank pressure sensor that measures the pressure of the tank and relays the information to the PCM. The EVAP canister purge control solenoid valve controls the amount of vapor admitted to the intake manifold through this duct and this depending on the temperature of the engine and the information provided by different sensors. The most frequent signs of failure of the EVAP include the smell of gasoline, which may mean a problem with the fuel cap, hose connections to the canister. A complete diagnostic is done using some special equipment such as an OBD-II scan and smoke making tool for a leak test. Regarding evap , purge control solenoid valve, canister, air filter and vent shut valve can be replaced by following the above procedure but to install them removing various fittings and wiring and raising the vehicle and the reversing the above process. The fuel tank pressure sensor needs the tank to be dropped to enable connection of the sensor.
