Saturn LS Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you disconnect and adjust the shift cable in the event of hard shifting on Saturn LS?
A: In the event of hard shifting, disconnect the cable at the transaxle and operate the shifter from the driver's seat; if the shift lever moves smoothly through all positions with the cable disconnected, then the cable should be adjusted. To remove and install the shift cable, work inside the vehicle to remove the shift knob retainer and then the knob, followed by pulling up on the shift lever boot until the shift trim bezel disengages from the center console. Disconnect the shift indicator electrical connector and remove the shift trim and boot together, then remove the center console. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to pry the shift cable end from the shift lever pin, then pry the shift cable retaining clip up and away from the shift cable. Depress the tabs on the shift cable while pushing it forward to release it from its bracket on the shift lever assembly, noting its path to the firewall. Raise the hood and place a blanket over the left fender to protect it, then locate the shift lever in the engine compartment near the top of the transaxle. Disconnect the shift cable end by prying it up and away from the shift lever, and depress and hold the two tabs on the shift cable to push it through its bracket. Trace the shift cable to the engine-compartment firewall and pry the large rubber cable grommet from the firewall, then carefully remove the shift cable by pulling it through the hole in the firewall from the engine compartment side. For installation, reverse the removal process, ensuring the shift cable follows its original path and that the cable end fittings are firmly snapped back into place. Confirm that the shift control lever is in the PARK position, detach the shift cable from the transaxle shift lever, and ensure the transaxle shift lever is in PARK. Pry the lock tab up on the shift cable adjustment assembly, reconnect the end of the shift cable to the transaxle shift lever, and push the lock tab back into place. Shift the transaxle into all gear positions to ensure the cable is functioning properly, readjust if necessary, and confirm that the engine only starts in PARK and NEUTRAL.
