Saturn Ion Catalytic Converter
Saturn Ion Catalytic Converter is used in exhaust and emission systems of the motor vehicle; its purpose is to convert toxic gases developed during the process of burning fuels into less toxic substances. It mainly converts carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) to water, carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen (N2) through redox reactions with the help of precious metals- platinum, palladium and rhodium. With the past years' models of Saturn Ion, it has adopted the two-way and the better three-way systems of the catalytic converters. The latter became standard by 1981, in addition to reducing NOx, CO and HC were oxidised. Performance catalytic converters are also produced for better flow to make high performance output while achieving catalytic efficiency. These converters may be direct fit or universal, so that the direct fit converters are bolt-in while the universal converters will require some alterations to fit in place.

- Q: How do I remove and install a catalytic converter?A: To remove the catalytic converter, open the hood and spray the upper exhaust pipe-to-exhaust manifold flange nuts with penetrating oil. Let it sit and remove the nuts. Raise the vehicle and support it on jackstands. Disconnect the downstream Oxygen Sensor and, if applicable, the upstream sensor if it is installed in the exhaust pipe rather than the manifold. Remove the two bolts/nuts that attach the exhaust pipe behind the catalytic converter to the resonator pipe flange. Finally, remove the catalytic converter and discard the old flange gaskets.
