Pontiac Phoenix Coil Spring Insulator Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install rear Spring and Spring Insulator on a Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix?
A: To lift the car's rear, place a jackstand at an appropriate spot under the frame. One can hire such a tool as a transmission jack or floor jack from rentals and some auto parts stores to support the back axle. Wheels and brake drums should be removed. The parking brake cable is taken off by loosening the adjustment nut and prying forward on the parking brake equalizer lever so that it disconnects from the equalizer lever in front. The equalizer lever is twisted and detached from its pivot mount on the body. At this point, take out bolts joining brake line brackets to chassis on either side of the car. Take off track bar. Remove lower shock attaching nuts and bolts from both Shock Absorbers. Lowering rear axle sufficiently, Coil Springs or coil spring insulators are taken down. Avoid suspending the rear axle with brake hoses because they may be damaged thereby breaking them into pieces. Do not suspend the rear axle by the brake hoses, as this could damage the hoses. If coil spring insulators are worn, cracked or damaged; they should be replaced. Examine springs for cracks or other injuries. If any of these conditions occur or if there has been sagging of rear of car, springs must be replaced. Coil Springs have to be changed both together. Reversal of removal procedure is called installation. See to that when installing Coil Springs they are in their proper position. Adjust parking brakes.
