Pontiac Grand Prix Water Pump

The Water Pump in Pontiac Grand Prix is an important component that pumps water from the radiator to the engine to pick heat produced during the burning of fuel. A standard design incorporated a belt-driven pump with an impeller to circulate the coolant, and the modern ones use electric water pumps. There are special performance water pumps for high performing engines having relatively higher coolant flow rate and less power draw as compared to the standard water pumps. These pump can be either in aluminum or cast iron and come in different designs depending on the type of engine and its use. Replacing the water pump with the electric water pump eradicates parasitic power loss and brings such advantages as options to adjust flow rates and cool a vehicle after shutting down the engine.

Each OEM Pontiac Grand Prix Water Pump we offer is competitively priced and comes with the assurance of the manufacturer's warranty for the part. Furthermore, we guarantee the speedy delivery of your orders right to your doorstep. Our hassle-free return policy is also in place for your peace of mind.

Pontiac Grand Prix Water Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you replace the Water Pump on Pontiac Grand Prix?
A: To replace the fuel pump/sending unit assembly, start by relieving the fuel pressure and disconnecting the negative battery terminal. Remove the Fuel Tank or access cover from the trunk floor pan, depending on the model year. The assembly is held in place by a cam lock ring mechanism. Unlock the assembly by turning the inner ring clockwise or tapping the lock ring counterclockwise. Carefully remove the assembly from the tank, being cautious of the fuel level float and sending unit. Check the condition of the rubber O-ring and replace if necessary. Inspect and clean the filter on the fuel pump. If needed, separate the fuel pump and sending unit, being careful not to damage the rubber insulator and fuel strainer. To install, position the rubber gasket around the tank opening and guide the assembly into the tank. Turn the inner lock ring counterclockwise until the locking cams are engaged. Finally, reinstall the fuel tank or the fuel pump access cover.
  • Q: What are the ways to check the operation of the water pump while it's installed on the engine for Pontiac Grand Prix?
A: Water pump failure can result in engine overheating. To check its operation:With the engine at normal temperature, squeeze the upper radiator hose. A working pump produces a pressure surge upon hose release. Be cautious of fan blades.Inspect the pump's weep hole for coolant leaks, signaling a seal failure. A flashlight may be needed to locate the hole.Listen for a howling noise from the drivebelt area, indicating bearing failure. Rock the pump pulley to feel for shaft wear. Don't confuse drivebelt squealing with bearing issues.
  • Q: How to disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the water pump?
A: Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Caution: On models equipped with the Theftlock audio system, be sure the lockout feature is turned off before performing any procedure which requires disconnecting the battery. Drain the cooling system. If the coolant is relatively new or in good condition, save it and reuse it. Remove the air cleaner if necessary. Remove the windshield washer reservoir and the coolant recovery reservoir, as necessary. Remove the serpentine belt and tensioner. Remove the alternator and its brackets and the air conditioner compressor, as necessary. Remove the exhaust manifold heat shields and the exhaust manifold. Remove the radiator outlet pipe-to-radiator pump cover bolts, leaving the lower radiator hose attached. Pull down on the radiator outlet pipe to disengage it from the water pump and detach the pipe from the oil pan and transaxle. Remove the water pump cover-to-cylinder block bolts. On 3.1L engines, remove the small belt guard just above the water pump. Remove the bolts/nuts and detach the water pump from the engine. Clean the fastener threads and any threaded holes in the engine to remove corrosion and sealant. Compare the new pump to the old one to make sure they're identical. Remove all traces of old gasket material from the engine with a gasket scraper. Clean the engine and water pump mating surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone. Carefully attach the pump and gasket to the engine and start the bolts/nuts finger tight. Tighten the fasteners in 1/4-turn increments to the torque figure listed in the Specifications. Don't overtighten them or the pump may be distorted.
