Q: How do you remove and install a transaxle on Pontiac Grand Prix?
A: Before the removal of the transaxle, the negative cable of the battery must be disconnected, and if there is an existent Anti-hijack system also known as Theft lock audio system, it must be turned off. Lift the car by using the jack and place it on the jackstands and then drain the transaxle. Disconnect bolts and cancel the torque converter cover and be sure to note the orientation of the torque converter and driveplate to properly align it at the time of reassembly. There are a number of bolts that hold the torque converter to the driveplate; to gain access to them, turn the crankshaft pulley bolt. Second, disconnect the starter motor and the driveaxles, take off the speed sensor and electrical connectors of the transaxle, and, if there are, sever any vacuum hoses. Any exhaust parts that hinder the removal of the transaxle should be taken off and the TV cable if existent should be disconnected, the shift linkage should also be disconnected. Place an assist with the three-bar support fixture and, then, take off the engine mount strut brackets. Place a jack underneath the transaxle ideally a hydraulic jack and disconnect the transaxle from the brace connecting the transaxle with the engine and the bolts holding the transaxle to the engine. Lower the transaxle a little further to seporate and cap the cooler lines just to make sure all the fluids are drained out. Perform an operation of disconnecting the dipstick tube, the tie rod ends, then unbolt the steering rack, and the engine mount nuts and front subframe assembly before you proceed to unscrew the Bolts that fix the front subframe assembly. Remove the transaxle as far as it is possible to pull it back to disengage the dowel pins situated in the engine block to the transaxle then lower the front subframe and a transaxle off the car. For installation, make sure the torque converter is fully mated to the transmission; rotate the torque converter while attempting to push it forward towards the transaxle and the converter will "thunk" into place. Apply multi-purpose grease on the torque converter hub, thereafter lifting the transaxle and the subframe into position and ensure it is parallel to the ground. Insert the dowel pins on to the torque converter and mate the converter splines with the driveplate splines, after that put the housing onto the engine and tighten the bolts that connect the housing to the engine as well as the torque converter to driveplate bolts to the proper torque. The suspension and chassis part should be reinstalled, jacks should be taken off and the dipstick tube should be installed. Bolt the starter motor back in place , reconnect the vacuum hoses if there are any, reconnect the shift and TV linkage and plug the electrical connector in. Torque converter cover, driveaxles and speedometer/speed sensor cable should be then installed. Replace/bend the shift linkage, replace any exhaust parts, lower the vehicle, fill the transaxle, road test the vehicle and check for any leaks.
