Q: How to check and replace spark plug wires in distributorless ignition systems?
A: Distributorless ignition systems are equipped in these models. The Spark Plug wires get connected directly to the ignition coils. For many V6 engines (excluding 3.4L), rotating the engine may be required to access the rear spark plugs or wires. There are no spark plug wires in Quad-4 engines. On 3.4L engines, you must first remove the upper intake manifold to get to the right side (rear) spark plugs or plug wires. To reach the right side (rear) spark plugs or plug wires on 1996 and later 3800 engines, one must remove the acoustic engine cover first. Check the spark plug wires at recommended intervals as well as whenever new spark plugs are installed in an engine. Inspect one wire at a time so that they cannot be mixed up because it is important for good running of an engine. Remove the wire from the spark plug itself, by pulling on its rubber boot after grabbing and twisting it a little bit. Do not pull on the wire itself, only on the rubber boot itself. Inside of this boot there will be corrosion that looks like white crusty powder. Pushing both wire and boot back onto end of sparkplug; it should fit tightly. If not remove wire and carefully crimping metal connector inside boot with pliers until it fits snugly onto end of sparkplug should do it…. Use a clean rag to wipe all along length of wire removing any accumulated dirt grease… Check for burns, cracks, and other damage after cleaning wire… Never bend or pull excessively on a wire-conductor inside can break… Now, disconnect coil from coil pack; once again, pull only on rubber boot.… Make sure you have checked for corrosion same way as described above.… Put new wire on coil… One should then check remaining wires one at a time making sure when checking complete they are still properly attached to both ignition coil and sparking plug.… Therefore, if new spark plug wires are needed, a set should be bought for the specific model of your engine.… For these wire sets that come in pre-cut form with rubber boots already fixed, purchase for your engine model.… To prevent mix-ups in the firing order, remove and replace one wire at a time.
