Pontiac Grand Prix Center Console Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you disconnect the negative cable at the battery and remove the console on Pontiac Grand Prix?
A: Disconnect the negative cable at the battery, ensuring that the lock-out feature of the Theft lock audio system is turned off if applicable. For models through 1996, remove the shift handle trim, coin holder, storage compartment, armrest, shift knob, and any other components blocking access to the console bolts. Remove the retaining screw or pry the clip out of the automatic and manual transaxle shift handles, then pull the handle or knob off the shift lever. Remove the bolts and pull the console up, then lift it for access and unplug the electrical connectors. For 1997 and later models, apply the parking brake lever and place the gear selector into the Low position. Pull the console trim bezel upward from the front, disconnect the electrical connectors, and remove the bezel. Remove the retaining screws securing the front half of the console, then detach the screws in the console glove box securing the rear half. Lift the console up and over the shift lever, disconnect any electrical connections, and remove the console from the vehicle. Installation is the reverse of removal.
