Pontiac Firebird Throttle Body
The Throttle Body in Pontiac Firebird vehicles allows a direct control on the amount of air that can get into the engine and therefore performance ability and efficiency. Located between the air cleaner and intake manifold it has a butterfly valve that opens in proportion to the accelerator pedal position so as to admit more air into the engine. This action is accompanied with different sensors that are in touch with the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) for the purpose of modifying the fuel injection. The Throttle Bodies also evolved as the years went on, using Throttle Body Injection TBI and today's sophisticated multi-port fuel injection. Some earlier model Firebirds used TBI units which are relatively basic and housed within a single unit, whereas later model Firebirds usually use Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) systems for improved sensitivity that also interconnect with other safety functions. A shift from mechanical linkages to electronic systems represents a trend improvement on the Throttle Body for the Pontiac Firebird sequence.
