- Q: How do you remove and reinstall the damper and associated components from the crankshaft in V6 engine on Pontiac Firebird?A: At the top take off the hose from the retaining strap of the hose by unbuckling the strap that holds the hose on the underside of the shroud and move the hose to the side. Subsequently, twist open the four bolts holding the upper radiator shroud in place and pry the shroud off from the radiator, then remove the cooling fan from the fan pulley. If your car has V-belts, slacken the accessory drivebelt adjusting bolts slightly to release the drivebelts, which must be tagged so that they can be reconnected correctly in the future. For the models with the serpentine belt, turn the belt tensioner pulley in the opposite direction you are making and unhook the belt. Bolt up in the center of the crankshaft pulley has to be unbolted and then the pulley has to be pulled off. Put a puller against the harmonic balancer and slowly pull it off the crankshaft; it droops as it comes loose. When fitting the harmonic balancer first lubricate the front cover seal area using the engine oil or multi-purpose grease. Place the harmonic balancer on top of the key on the crankshaft make sure that the harmonic balancer keyway is on the key. The installation of the harmonic balancer requires the usage of an installation tool which is used to apply pressure on the crankshaft and ensure that this pressure is evenly spread across the hub of the harmonic balancer. After the installation tool is taken off, the crankshaft pulley should be installed and the bolts to be tightened to the required torque. Last, going backwards for the remaining components, undo the drivebelts and remove them.
