- Q: How do you lower the antenna and replace it if the mast has failed on Pontiac Firebird?A: Lower the antenna by turning off the radio or ignition switch. If the mast has failed in the up position and is being replaced, it can be cut off at fender level for easier removal. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, ensuring to disable the anti-theft feature on models with a Delco Loe II audio system before doing so. Remove the screws that attach the inner fender skirt to the fender. To access the antenna assembly, pull down on the rear of the fender skirt and hold it away from the fender using a block of wood. Remove the escutcheon nut that retains the antenna cable assembly to the fender. Disconnect the electrical leads, then remove the bolts that hold the antenna assembly to the bracket and take out the assembly. For installation, reverse the removal steps, ensuring the mast is fully retracted and the lower bracket is secured by the fender skirt retaining screw.
