Pontiac Fiero Parking Brake Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you remove and install the parking brake cable on Pontiac Fiero?
A: To dismantle remove the parking brake cable the following procedure should be followed; the vehicle should be lifted off the ground using a jack and properly supported by jackstands. Turn counterclockwise the adjusting nut at the equalizer and pull the cables apart by unscrewing the threaded bolt on the adjuster nut. If you backed off or disconnected the adjuster nut then you should remove the cable clips and the bolts that retain the retaining clip in the left wheel well and then the car can be lowered. Cut off the boot and parking brake with an armado then unscrew the bolt of the seat belt and take off the carpet finishing molding which has pop fasteners. Then, then remove the shoulder harness retaining bolt and the quarter trim finishing molding, retract the carpet to see the path where the cable will go, and then remove the cable from the parking brake lever and then pass it through the car body. For installation, run entire new cable and fix the forward end to the parking brake hand lever properly engaging it in the slot provided at the base of the lever pivot. Replace the carpet and fit the quarter trim finish molding before fitting the shoulder harness retaining bolt; this bolt should then be tightened. Fit the seat belt bolt and carpet finish molding and locate the parking brake boot at the parking brake hand lever. Lift the vehicle once again and place it on the jack stands, secure the cables by installing the two retaining clip bolts which are available at the left wheel well and also the cable clips. Last but not the least, fix the right rear caliper cable in the cable adjuster and then engage the equalizer nut in the nut seat such that all the available slack in the cable is utilized.
