Pontiac Fiero Harmonic Balancer Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What precautions should be taken when removing and installing the inertia weight section of the vibration damper in V6 engine on Pontiac Fiero?
A: The inertia weight section of the harmonic balancer is assembled to the hub with a rubber sleeve, the removal and installation procedures must be taken otherwise the tuning of the balancer and the engine timing reference will be faulty. Start with the removal of the negative cable from the battery, then, if needed, free the bolts that regulate the position of the accessory drivebelts and detach all the belts, putting tags to facilitate their reconnection. Lift the car and fix it on jack stands and remove the right side inner fender splash shield for easy access. Tighten the starter ring gear with a large screwdriver and undo the bolts on the accessory drivebelt pulley and upon one removing the pulley. Even when the ring gear is locked in position remove the sinc balancer retaining bolt and place a puller on the sinc balancer and slowly pull it off the crank-shaft without dropping it. The use of a puller that bolts to the hub should be used because a claw-type gear puller will only pull the outer part of the balancer from the hub. The harmonic balancer has three timing notches on the inertia ring, while the 1 cylinder timing reference mark is white painted in production; in case of a new balancer assembly put your mark there also. Also before installation of the balancer, apply the engine oil to the front cover seal contact region and the sealant to the key and key way. Place the balancer upon the key of the crankshaft in such a manner that the key way is correctly positioned with the key. This can be done using a balancer installation tool or if none is available, use a large socket, washer and the balancer retaining bolt and use it to press the balancer onto the nose of the crankshaft. It is recommended that after completing the removal of the installation tool or socket, washer, and bolt, the next process is the proper installation of the balancer retaining bolt that is tightened to the right torque. Replace the accessory drive pulley and the retaining bolts to the torque mentioned, replace the right inner fender splash shield, lower the car, set the accessory drive belts and connect the negative battery cable to the battery.
