Oldsmobile Omega Clutch Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to disengage and install a clutch cable?
A: Disengage the clutch cable from the clutch release lever at the transaxle, taking care not to allow the cable to snap backward toward the rear of this vehicle when it is disconnected because that can damage the quadrant in the self-adjusting mechanism. Then, lift away from the quadrant, and take off the locking pawl from it so that you can slide out on its right side without any problem. After that, go back to the engine compartment and remove two upper nuts that hold down cable retainer against upper mounting stuns of clutch cable bracket located on firewall. Unhook the transaxle mounted bracket to release cable; then remove it completely. Put on gasket on 2 upper mounting studs for clutch cable bracket as well as insert new cable into firewall and bracked until flange on cable retaining comes into contact with gasket. Attach pawl securely before connecting a wire through an opening at its bottom part and then along its top edge of quadrant. Use torque wrench to ensure tight fit of 2 top nuts which are mounted on retainer studs. Connect a wire into a transaxle fastened bracket with nut mounted thereon. Connect a wire without pulling it firmly on a step of one quadrant because this will cause breakage.
