GMC Terrain Tie Rod End

The Tie Rod End in GMC Terrain is an important component of the steering system aiding in connection between the steering rack and the steering knuckles. Such coupling is crucial for stabilizing the vehicle and for providing fine-tuning of direction and movement. The Tie Rod End consists of two components: the inner tie rod end and the outer tie rod end where there are coordinated functions with respect to steering response. Several years of production of the GMC Terrain may have incorporated different styles of Tie Rod Ends and these are not explained in detail. The main activity nevertheless remains the same across these types and involves guaranteeing correct and precise steering performance and vehicle dynamics. In the general steering system, the Tie Rod End is another crucial part since it is essential for the safe driving to function appropriately.

GMC Terrain Tie Rod End Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you remove the tie-rod?
A: To remove the tie-rod, start by loosening the wheel lug nuts and raising the front of the vehicle. Support it securely on jackstands, block the rear wheels, and set the parking brake. Remove the front wheel. Then, hold the tie-rod with a pair of locking pliers or wrench and loosen the jam nut enough to mark the position of the tie-rod end in relation to the threads. Loosen the nut from the tie-rod end ball-stud about 1/8-inch. Disconnect the tie-rod from the steering knuckle arm with a puller, remove the nut, and separate the tie-rod. Discard the used nut. To install the tie-rod, thread the tie-rod end onto the marked position and insert the tie-rod stud into the steering knuckle arm. Tighten the jam nut securely. Install a new nut on the stud and tighten it to the torque specifications. Install the wheel and lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts to the torque specifications. Finally, have the wheel alignment checked and, if necessary, adjusted.
