GMC Terrain Ignition Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install an ignition switch and lock cylinder?
A: Remove the cable that is connected to the negative terminal of the battery. You can remove the upper and lower steering column covers.Disconnect the park lock cable from the lock cylinder housing. Ignition Lock CylinderYou should insert into the lock cylinder your ignition key and turn it to ACC position.Put a pick or other small tool into that hole on the back part of the lock cylinder housing and press it in order to depress the release button. Take out the whole lock cylinder from its housing. While installing a new lock cylinder, ensure that you have set your ignition switch at ACC position. If this has not been done, use a screwdriver or needle-nose pliers to rotate it up to that point. The switch is not placed correctly when in other positions except ACC; therefore, it inhibits full insertion of this component in its bore.Place and see that all clicks are heard when one is inserting his/her lock cylinder into such housing associated with this switch. When removing, make sure to check if ignitions switch is operating as intended in Off, ACC, Run and Start positions. Housing and ignition switch RemovalIt is time for steering wheel removal now. Both multi-function switches must be removed without necessarily disconnecting any wires.Remove electrical connectors from ignition switch Detach Electrical Connectors from Ignition SwitchTake out two screws from ignition switch/key lock housing Insert key then turn it to ACC positionSlide off entire assembly from steering columnTake out mounting screws of ignition switch then remove same from housing InstallationTurn your ignition switch to ACC then fit it into this housing; fasten securely by tightening those screws meant for ignition switchesPut on a steering column a lock cylinder housing connecting all these with a multifunction lever bracket followed by bolt installation. After that, the bolts should be tightened securely to prevent lock tab on lock cylinder housing from disengaging with its slot in the steering column.Tighten lower mounting bolt and then upper mounting bolt until they both sit firmly.Lastly, tighten the upper bolt followed by lower bolt to the required torque. The rest of the installation procedure is the opposite of what was done during the preliminary separation process.
