GMC Sonoma Evaporator Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove the air conditioning Evaporator?
A: To remove the air conditioning system, start by discharging the system and disconnecting the battery cable. Then, drain the cooling system and disconnect the air conditioning lines from the blower/evaporator housing. Remove the wiring connector at the blower motor resistor and the large wiring bundle clip. Take out the computer and coolant recovery tank, and move the relay mounting bracket. Remove the housing mounting nuts and bolts, and pull the housing forward to break the seal and remove it. Separate the upper and lower halves of the housing, and remove the condenser. Check the core for leaks and straighten any bent fins. If installing a new evaporator core, transfer the sealing gaskets. For installation, refill the cooling system and use new R-134a-compatible o-rings. Ensure the foam gasket is in place when reinstalling the housing. If a new evaporator is installed, add refrigerant oil and have the system evacuated, recharged, and leak tested.
