Q: How do I replace the rear brake shoes on Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana?
A: To change out the vehicle's back brake shoe, first loosen the rear wheel lug nuts and elevate the rear of the vehicle using jackstands. Release parking brake and block front wheels. Remove rear wheels then remove the brake caliper, mounting bracket, and Brake Disc. For 2014 or earlier models, wash the brake assembly with a cleaner for a brake system and take off screw and clip securing bottom of shoe. Lift one end of the shoe over axle flange to remove it. Be sure that adjuster screw and tappet slots are parallel with backing plate prior to installing new shoe. Replace new shoe following reversal of removal process ensuring that ends of shoes fit properly in adjuster screw/tappet slot. For 2015 and later models unhook parking brake cable from park brake lever; wash brake assembly with a cleaner for a Brake System. Remove hold-down spring from both shoes as well as unhook return spring from both shoes. Lower assembly down past axle; twist two brake shoes to release lower return spring & adjuster wheel. Make sure adjuster screw and tappet slots are parallel with backing plate before installing new shoes.Test fittedness of new shoes by reversing removal procedure while making sure their ends seat properly in adjuster screws/tappet slots.Reset parking brakes when needed.
