Q: How to remove and install an air conditioning compressor?
A: To remove the air conditioning compressor, the system must first be discharged and the cable from the negative battery terminal disconnected. The air intake duct and resonator assembly should be removed on V8 engines, and the drivebelt and air conditioning compressor drivebelt should be taken off. The electrical connector(s) should be disconnected, and the compressor should be thoroughly cleaned around the refrigerant line fittings. The suction and discharge lines should be disconnected, and the compressor mounting bolts should be removed. When installing a new compressor, two ounces of R-134a compatible refrigerant oil should be poured into it prior to installation. The installation process is the reverse of removal, and new seals lubricated with clean refrigerant oil should be used when installing the line fitting bolt to the compressor. Finally, the cable should be reconnected to the negative battery terminal, and the system should be evacuated, recharged, and leak tested.
