Chevrolet S10 Fuel Level Sensor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to check the fuel level sending unit?
A: The Fuel Tank and Fuel Pump need to be removed so as to check if there is any issue with the fuel level sensor. Connect the ohmmeter's probes to the terminals of fuel level sensor signal and ground in the fuel pump module electrical connector. Change float position for empty (down) and tell its reading via an ohmmeter, which should be low (about 2 ohms). Push up float to full position; look at meter as resistance will be higher (aproximatly 90 ohms). If resistance readings are wrong or resistance does not change uniformly while moving the float from empty to full, then, definitely it is time for replacing the device. The fuel level sensor on all 1995-earlier models is incorporated into a complete tank unit assembly; therefore, only a fuel pump itself is serviced independently. Disconnect the electrical connector of the fuel level sensor, remove a retaining clip and take off a sensor from module. Remember how wiring was done in order to put it back correctly during installation. However, on 1996-later models with six-cylinder engines, this component remains part and parcel of an entire fuel pump assembly without being treated individually. In case of failure at any point of time by using a defective unit such as "fuel level sensor," it means that you have no other option other than changing whole pumping apparatus also known as "entire pump." This is applicable in both cases for installation which will be just contrary to what was previously performed while removing them from their respective positions earlier.
