Chevrolet Monte Carlo A/C Compressor Parts Questions & Experts Answers
A: To remove the air conditioning system, start by discharging it and removing the drivebelt. Then, raise the front of the vehicle and secure it on jackstands, and remove the right front wheel and fender splash shield. If it's a V8 engine model, also remove the lower engine splash shield. Disconnect the electrical connector from the compressor clutch field coil and the refrigerant line fitting from the compressor, including the stud for V8 engine models. Discard the sealing O-rings. Finally, remove the compressor mounting fasteners and remove the compressor. For installation, if a new compressor is being installed, drain excess oil as per the compressor's instructions. If the replacement compressor doesn't have a clutch, transfer the clutch from the original compressor. Before connecting the refrigerant line fitting, replace all O-rings and lubricate them with R-134a compatible refrigerant oil. The rest of the installation is the reverse of removal, tightening the line fitting fastener(s) and compressor mounting fasteners to the specified torque. Finally, have the system evacuated, recharged, and leak tested.
