A: Follow these steps to perform CV joint maintenance. Remove the drive axle first. If the drive axle has a boot cover, cut off clamps and slide it over the outer CV joint. Place the drive axle in a location with rags so as to avoid damaging the shaft. For the inner CV joint, cut off boot seal retaining clamps and slide boot towards the center of the axle, marking for reinstalling alignment tripod housing and drive axle. Remove spider assembly from axle by removing inner retaining ring and sliding back to expose outer retaining ring. Remove outer retaining ring and slide joint off of drive axle. Use tape or a cloth to secure the spider bearing assembly during removal and installation for both inner and outer CV joints. Clean components inspect replacing worn or damaged parts, apply CV joint grease if necessary. The spider assembly should be reassembled followed by tri-pot housing then collapsed joint dimension adjusted. Tighten clamps just like on installation, fix CV Boot (if applicable). Lightly tap around its circumference to dislodge then remove the seal retainer ring for outer CV joint being careful not to deform it. Cut off boot-to-shaft band, remove snap-ring then slide out joined assembly. After removing old boot mark inner race and cage for proper reassembly alignment; carefully take apart components. All parts should be cleaned inspected, reverse procedure for reassembling CV joint ensuring proper alignment of marks made prior to disassembly. Grease can be packed into assembly; CV Boot installed; inside applied with grease; position CV joint on drive axle; clamp down on CV Boot and seal retainer with clamps securely in place. Lastly, install drive axle to sum up everything.
