Chevrolet HHR Clutch Disc Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and inspect Clutch Disc,Clutch Fork,Pressure Plate and Release Bearing?
A: To access the clutch components, typically the transaxle is removed while leaving the engine in the vehicle. If the engine is being overhauled, it's advisable to check the clutch for wear and replace worn components. However, due to the relatively low cost of clutch components and the effort involved in accessing them, it's recommended to replace them whenever the engine or transaxle is removed, unless they are new or in excellent condition. The removal process involves supporting the engine while removing the transaxle, using an engine support fixture or hoist. A clutch alignment tool is installed through the clutch disc hub to support it during removal. The flywheel and pressure plate are carefully inspected for indexing marks or marked manually to ensure proper alignment during installation. The pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts are loosened in a criss-cross pattern, and once the spring pressure is relieved evenly, the pressure plate and clutch disc are removed. During inspection, the flywheel is checked for defects and is recommended to be machined if imperfections are slight. The clutch disc lining is inspected for wear, loose rivets, cracks, and other damage. The clutch release cylinder/bearing should also be replaced along with the clutch disc. The machined surfaces and diaphragm spring fingers on the pressure plate are inspected, and if damaged, the pressure plate should be replaced. Light glazing can be removed with emery cloth or sandpaper. For installation, the flywheel and pressure plate machined surfaces are cleaned thoroughly, ensuring no oil or grease is present. The clutch disc and pressure plate are positioned against the flywheel using an alignment tool, and the disc is centered by extending the tool through the splined hub and into the pilot bearing. The pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts are tightened gradually in a criss-cross pattern to prevent distortion. The clutch release cylinder is installed, and after all components are in place, the transaxle is reinstalled, completing the process.
