Chevrolet Express Crankshaft Pulley Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you replace the crankshaft vibration damper and Crankshaft Pulley in 4.3L V6 and 5.0L,5.7L,7.4L V8 engine on Chevrolet Express?
A: For the year 2014 and the earlier models, it is recommended to begin by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Next, you should take off a fan shroud and an engine cooling fan and then you will have to take off the engine drivebelt. Remove the bolts that join the crankshaft pulley with the harmonic balancer and extract the huge harmonic balancer-crankshaft bolt. To immobilise the crankshaft unscrew the starter and with the help of another person force a large screwdriver between the teeth of the ring gear. To remove the harmonic balancer from the crankshaft employ correct puller and pay attention to the fact that the puller should be placed only at the center of the balancer's hub; do not forget about the Woodruff key as well. After ensuring that the Woodruff key is correctly positioned, fit the harmonic balancer onto the crankshaft - just lightly smear some RTV sealant onto the keyway. Centre the Woodruff key into the keyway on the hub press the balancer onto the crankshaft using a crankshaft harmonic balancer installation tool. Apply clean engine oil on the threads of the crankshaft bolt to avoid gilling. Torque the crankshaft bolt to the prescribed value and go through the rest of the assembly procedure in reverse down to the final step. Before starting this procedure on the 2018 and later models, make certain that you have obtained the special removers and installers for a crankshaft harmonic balancer bolt as well as a new crankshaft harmonic balancer bolt. Remove the negative terminal of the battery, engage the parking break, lift the front part of the vehicle and place it on jack stands. Disconnect the drivebelt, the air conditioning compressor belt, the vacuum pump belt, and the assembly of the cooling fan and the shroud. Take off the starter motor then, put the driveplate holding tool on to the ring gear-tooth and tighten the bolts to the engine block. To eliminate the balancer on the crankshaft you have to apply a special puller, the jaws of which have to touch only the hub of the balancer and to insert the right adapter into the nose of the crankshaft in order not to harm the threads. Align the crankshaft pulley/balancer on the crankshaft and just insert it until it reaches its limit. Put on the crankshaft pulley/balancer over the crankshaft with the help of a crankshaft balancer installer. Put back the previous crankshaft balancer bolt, torque it in place and then measure the distance from the end of the crankshaft snout to the balancer hub; it should extend 3/32 to 11/64 out beyond the crankshaft snout. In case this is wrong, place the balancer on until the right measure is attained. Last, fix a new crankshaft balancer bolt and torque and angle it properly in the backward way and thus completes the installation.
