Q: How is the Coolant Temperature Sensor checked and replace for Chevrolet El Camino?
A: The indicator system consists of a lamp mounted on the instrument panel and a sender unit which is located on the left-hand cylinder head. In case of unusual indication or developing fault, check the coolant level in the system and then ensure that the connecting wiring between the gauge and the sender unit is secure. When you turn your ignition switch ON and your starter motor rotates, your indicator lamp should be lit (over heated engine indications). If this lamp does not come on, it can be due to a burned bulb, faulty ignition switch or open circuit. As soon as you start your car engine, this lamp should go off and remain like that unless there is overheating of the engine. The lamp failing to go off may be because there is an earth leak between the lamp and sender unit, temperature senders defective ignition switch. To replace the sender unit it simply unscrews from left-hand cylinder head and replacement installed. There will be some loss of coolant so check level following fitting of new one.
