Chevrolet El Camino Bumper Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you remove and install the front bumper on Chevrolet El Camino?
A: For the vehicles between 1969 and 1972 start with the hood open and the battery disconnected, then proceed to remove the radiator grille. Then, remove the parking lamps and the side marker lamps from the car and put them also in a safe place. Put the spacer around the mounting bolts for the re-installation alignment, then loosening the bumper bracket from the frame and then taking out the bumper. As to the vehicles produced after January, 1973, they are equipped with energy-absorbing means in the form of cushions placed between the bumpers and the car's frame which should be replenished with hydraulic fluid and should not be opened or subjected to heat. Place scribe around the bolt for the proper alignment for the re-installation, take out the bolts on the reinforcement plate to the energy absorber on both sides and pull the bumper assembly forward. If the reinforcement plate is to be removed then remove the license plate bracket and other reinforcement plate brackets. To get rid of the Energy Absorber, the latter must be unbolted from the frame and pulled out of the car. Similarly, installation involves reversing the removal process, amidst making sure that the bumper is anchored on the right position by using the marks made on it earlier.
