A: To remove the air conditioning system, start by discharging and recovering the air conditioning system. Then, disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Loosen the lug nuts on the right front wheel, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the right front wheel and the inner fender splash shield. Next, remove the drivebelt and, on 1.4L engine models, the charge air cooler inlet duct. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the compressor and remove the line retaining bolt. Disconnect the compressor inlet and outlet lines from the compressor, removing and discarding the old O-rings. Finally, remove the compressor mounting bolts and remove the compressor. For installation, if a new compressor is being installed, follow the directions with the compressor regarding the measuring and adding of oil prior to installation. The clutch may need to be transferred from the original to the new compressor. Before reconnecting the inlet and outlet lines to the compressor, replace the O-rings and lubricate them with refrigerant oil. Replace the air conditioning refrigerant desiccant. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal. Balance the compressor oil by draining the oil from the old compressor into a graduated container and recording the amount. Add this amount to any oil measured when the system was evacuated. If the total amount of oil drained is less than 1.4 oz (40 ml), no balancing is required. If it is more, subtract 1.4 oz (40 ml) from the drained amount and add the difference to the new compressor. Install the compressor and have the system evacuated, recharged, and leak tested.
