What is the purpose and functionality of the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint system and Occupant Detection Sensor on Chevrolet Corvette?

Each and every model comprises of the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint or SIR known as airbag which helps the driver and the front seat passenger from being seriously injured in the event of a head on or front impact crash. This system comprises the impact sensors, driver side air bag module mounted in steering wheel, passengers air bag module in glove box region, sensing / diagnostic module under central console, side curtain air bags and seat belt pre tensioners. The driver's side airbag inflator is located in the steering wheel and it inflates almost immediately on receiving an electric current which is passed through a spiral cord so that the connection remains regardless of how the steering wheel is angled. The passenger's airbag is positioned over the glove box and is a bigger unit as it comes with a texture finish to the trim which opens up once the airbag has inflated. Side-curtain airbags are Supplementary restraint systems that involve inflatable cushions that are secured to the headliner, and that inflate only in the case of a side impact, protecting the heads of both front and rear seat occupants. Sensing and diagnostic module initiates deployment of the air bags in the event of an accident, and would test the system each time the car is started, and "Air Bag" light illuminates to indicate system is okay. If there is some problem, the light will stay on, or blink informing the owner about necessary service. They contain pyrotechnic units that tighten the seat belts during an impact with a view of preparing the occupants for the collision. The airbags should be de-enabled when the person is working on the seats and each live module of airbag has to be given to a dealer or a qualified repair shop for its proper end-of-life disposal. For component removal, the following parts can be removed; driver side air bag module and clock spring and passenger airbag require removal of the instrument panel upper trim pad, and connectors and securing nuts to be disconnected. The sensing and diagnostic module can be gotten to by removing the HVAC control panel or by pulling off the connectors that are required; the procedures of installation on the other hand are the reverse of the removal. If the unit is replaced the programming is needed but more so if the PCM/BCM was also changed as the SDM has to be reprogrammed for this module.
