The idler arm should also be checked for excessive play, with a measurement greater than 1/4-inch indicating the need for replacement. Additionally, torn ball stud boots, frozen joints, and bent or damaged linkage components should be inspected. The removal and installation process for the tie-rod involves loosening the wheel lug nuts, raising the vehicle, and removing the wheel. The cotter pin is then removed and the castellated nut loosened. Depending on whether the outer or inner tie-rod end or the entire tie-rod is being replaced, the appropriate steps are followed.
