  • Q: How to replace the turn signal switch assembly and Ignition Lock Cylinder on Chevrolet Astro?
    A: The above procedure must be done using a special lock plate spring compressor, and in case of the presence of a tilt wheel it should be straightened. Start by removing the cable on the negative terminal of the battery and if the car has an airbag, then switch the airbag off. Models with anti-theft audio system require extra precautions, as the anti theft feature must be switched off prior to the battery disconnect. Removed next, the steering wheel together with the column trim plate and the lock plate cover in case it exists. For airbag-equipped models, the snap-ring and coil assembly are required to be dismantled so that the coil may rest by the wiring harness while the wave washer is taken out. One has to use a special tool and squish the lock plate to unlock and take off the retaining ring of the lock plate. On the 1995 and earlier models, the turn signal canceling cam and spring as well as the hazard warning knob and the turn signal lever arm screw have to be taken out, together with three switch mounting screws. Pull out steering column turn signal connector and if the switch is to be replaced pull out connectors from wiring harness assembly. Remove the turn signal switch assembly from the steering column, and if used alone on replacement, continue as follows. Using the needle nose pliers carefully pull the buzzer switch out of the pc board, do not lose the little retainer clip. Take out the Ignition Lock Cylinder retaining screw, rotate the key to the ON-position and pull it out of the steering column. The removal process is basically the opposite of the installation process where attention to properly connect the new switch wiring harness and to make certain that the airbag coil is well positioned. On 1996 and later models, it is necessary to remove the upper and lower steering column cover, lower the steering column if required, separate the cable tie for the switch wiring harness and plug the electrical connector. Depending on the model, there may be either three or six screws at the back of the combination switch; unscrew these to release the switch and withdraw it from the steering column, disconnecting it and the wiring harness pigtail at the same time; during the process of installation, use new cable ties to fix the new wiring harness. For the Ignition Lock Cylinder, insert the ignition key into the Start position plunge a 1/16" Allen wrench through the hole above the lock cylinder, and then, after turning the key back into the Run position; pull out the lock cylinder. Remove the upper and lower covers for the Ignition Switch, pull the alarm switch retaining clip with a screwdriver, then unplug the switch and the wiring harness at the firewall, and use cable ties to fasten the new harness.
