This procedure applies only to models with rack-and-pinion steering. Begin by loosening the wheel lug nuts, raising the vehicle, and securely supporting it on jackstands before removing the wheels. Next, detach the tie-rod ends from the tie-rods and remove the tie-rod end locknuts. Use pliers to remove the outer boot clamps, then cut off the inner boot clamps and discard them; the outer clamp on the rack and pinion boot can be squeezed off, while the inner clamp must be cut. Mark the location of the breather tube, if used, in relation to the rack assembly, then remove the boots and the tube. Before installing new boots, apply some grease to the exposed ends of the toothed rack. Install a new clamp on the inner end of the boot and apply multi-purpose grease to the groove on the tie-rod and the mounting grooves on the steering gear. Align the breather tube with the marks made during removal, if applicable, and slide the new boot onto the steering gear housing, ensuring it isn't twisted before tightening the new inner clamp. Finally, install the outer clamps and tie-rod end locknuts, reattach the tie-rod ends, and have the front end alignment checked and adjusted if necessary.
