Cadillac CTS Pressure Plate Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install Clutch Disc and Pressure Plate on Cadillac CTS?
A: Simplified access to the clutch parts is done by pulling out the transmission but leaving the engine mounted on the car. It is also about time to check on the clutch during the process of removing the engine for a big overhaul for it may also be worn out and will need some replacements. Since clutch components are comparatively cheaper as far as the cost is concerned but the time and effort spent in getting at them is considerable, it is better to replace them whenever an engine or the transmission is pulled out, except where they are new or in as-good-as new condition. Start by first pulling out the transmission then suspending the engine on a fixture or hoist. For now the clutch release cylinder assembly can stay with the transmission. On the other hand, for ensuring that clutch disc is held in position so that it can be removed, use a clutch alignment tool on the clutch disc hub. Check the flywheel and pressure plate for signs of indexing, and in the event that none are present, make your marks that will be useful as the components are put back into place. You should then slacken the pressure plate to flywheel bolts in a star like manner to help to relieve the spring pressure and then proceed to remove the bolts, pressure plate and clutch disc. On inspection, there are likely to be some cracks or other defects on the flywheel and thus get it machined flat and smooth. Chech and the thickness of lining of the clutch disc as well as any signs of wear and tear, that is if the lining is less than 1/16-inch above the heads of the rivets. Besides the clutch disc, it is also necessary replacing the release cylinder assembly. Check out the pressure plate for signs of wear or damage and then replace the component if it for any reason is worn out. Inspect the checking of the pilot bushing in the crankshaft for its wear or damage and replace it if necessary. Contraction of the stent can also be done by the use of a slide hammer and puller attachment. To install, the flywheel and pressure plate surfaces should be free from oil or grease, therefore proper cleaning is advisable. Align the clutch disc and the pressure plate to the flywheel and make a correct installation with the assist of the alignment tool. Loosen the pressure plate to flywheel bolts until they are just tight enough that you can feel the threads and then center the clutch disc and tighten the bolts in a 'star' pattern to reduce the risk of warping. After tightening of all bolts, the torque for each bolt should be again tightened and then the alignment tool should be removed. Temporarily install the bonding assembly, apply high-temperature grease to the release lever contact areas and the transmission input shaft bearing retainer, then install the clutch release cylinder assembly if it was removed, then the transmission and the other removed parts.
