Buick Skylark Axle Shaft

Particularly, the Axle Shaft of Buick Skylark is a kind of very important unit that transfers power from the differential to the drive wheels in order to rotate independently in order to improve 'grip'. These steel shafts are available in a number of designs for example fixed axles used in trucks and early rear wheel drive automobiles, and variable axles in automobiles with independent suspension system. Differential & axle shafts are enclosed by solid axles while half shafts translate the power from the transaxle to the wheels. Axle shafts are subject to the abnormal wear due to excessive loading, bending due to obstacles on the road as well as splinges twisting, that may require such operations as bearing and seal replacements. Thus, the proper functioning of the Axle Shaft is critical to the reduction of noise and the prevention of vibration to enhance the overall performance of a vehicle.

Each OEM Buick Skylark Axle Shaft we offer is competitively priced and comes with the assurance of the manufacturer's warranty for the part. Furthermore, we guarantee the speedy delivery of your orders right to your doorstep. Our hassle-free return policy is also in place for your peace of mind.

Buick Skylark Axle Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to disassembly and reassembly Axle Shaft and components for Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix?
A: To start replacing the axle shaft components, you need to detach it from the vehicle. Carefully knock off the outer joint seal retainer from around the joint assembly by tapping evenly all the way round it and severing the seal retaining clamp with a hacksaw blade. The joint assembly is removed from the axle shaft by spreading apart the retaining ring with snap ring pliers. Take off the axle shaft's outer joint seal as well as its seal retainer. To remove ball bearings, softly tap on bearing cage for rotation within outer race. Pivot cage and inner race that aligns windows of cage with lands of outer race are lifted out after balls have been removed. Withdraw inner race by rotating it within cage. Using this method, take out the inner joint assembly, seal retainer, inner joint seal and seal retaining clamp right from the axle shaft. Clean all pieces in solvent; keep separate inner and outer joint assembly parts. Assess races, cages and ball bearings for any damage that may call for replacement. Check condition of rubber seal boots for any holes or cracks; if necessary put in new ones only then apply lithium-based grease into them then begin reassembling parts again. Put back balls and pack grease into joints before applying a new hose clamp or seal retaining clamp onto axle shaft followed by a seal retainer and finally an inner joint assembly's sealing point at doorways to avoid leakages which can be course by looseness during driving. These seals must be tightened to their grooves using clamps in order to adjust them until they fit properly thereby preventing further leakage through these joints in future when driving after installation. Finally follow these steps once more but now installing outer one on other side so do not forget about slide it over shaft while pressing other end of assemble until retaining ring will pop up back into place along entire length. At last reinstall axle shaft into vehicle.
  • Q: What is the design and function of the drive axles for Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix?
A: There are two axle shafts used in the X-Body cars. These axles are double–offset designs, consisting of an axle shaft with a ball bearing joint on each end which connects the shaft to the transaxle and front hubs respectively. All X–Body axle shafts, except for the left hand inner joint of the automatic transaxle, are retained by a male spline that locks into the transaxle through barrel type snap rings. In the automatic transaxle model, this joint uses a female spline which is fitted onto a shaft within the transaxle. Every axle shaft has a helical spline end which engages with press fit steering knuckle and hub assembly where no play between the axle shaft and hub assembly exists, resulting in a more durable and quieter unit. Any attempt to heat up or straighten any part of these assemblies could result in weakened metal or other damage to be incurred. Damages of rubber seal boots covering joints of driving shafts should be kept away from when working with or being near propeller shaft assemblies due to dirt and water leakage inside as well as breakage of ball bearing.
  • Q: How do you remove the rear axle for Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix?
A: To remove the rear axle, start by removing the rear springs and disconnecting the brake lines from the control arm attachment. Disconnect and cap rigid brake lines from both rear brake cylinders and disconnect the right rear parking brake cable from the left rear parking brake cable. Next, disconnect the right rear and left rear parking brake cables from their brackets on the rear axle. Remove bolts securing the rear parking brake cable guide to underbody and allow whole parking brake assembly to hang loose from right rear backing plate. Remove bolts securing hub and bearing assembly to rear axle; remove assemblies with brake backing plates. With another person's help, steady jack under the rear axle and remove bolts that secure control arm brackets to body. Lower, pull out of underneath car. In case of replacing a new axle again, remove control arm brackets from control arms and install them on new axle. Inspect Control Arm Bushings for any damage necessary. Before installing make sure that lower edge of control arms is true horizontal plain and adjust control arm brackets to 45° angle if required. Reverse order of removal in installing rear axel ensuring not to tighten lower shock nuts or track arm nuts until car is lowered onto suspension with its full weight on it. Finally, bleed the brakes system as usual then adjust parking Brake.
  • Q: How to remove and install the Axle Shaft for Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix?
A: To remove the hub nut, lift the front of the car and prop it up with jackstands. After that, take off the wheel and disconnect a brake line clip from a strut. Then without breaking apart an inlet line, get away with disc brake caliper. On installation mark must be made on cam bolt to equal this adjustment for camber. Remove both the Cam bolt and upper attaching bolt; then remove steering knuckle assembly from strut bracket. Use GM special tool or equivalent to draw axle shaft out of transaxle and remove axle shaft from hub and bearing assembly using same tool. In case axle shaft requires overhaul, automotive mechanic shop should press seal retainers in place. Also replace steering knuckle seal when replacing axle shaft. Install axle shaft loosely into steering knuckle and transaxle; also loosely attach steering knuckle onto strut bracket. Mount brake caliper followed by axle shaft into steering knuckle secured with hub nut tightly. Lower car just enough to align cam bolt with alignment marks; torque both cam bolt & upper nut down to specs. Connect the axle shaft to transaxle by tapping until seated appropriately. Attach brake line clip onto strut bracket, mount wheel, lower car to ground. Lastly, torque hub nut down to specs.
