The Cadillac Cimarron, manufactured and marketed from 1982 to 1988, marked the brand's first post-war compact car. Conceived as a competitor to similarly sized premium sedans from European automakers in North America, it was the shortest-wheelbase Cadillac since 1908 and the first Cadillac with a four-cylinder engine since 1914. Manufactured at South Gate Assembly and Janesville Assembly, the Cimarron initially featured a 1.8 L four-cylinder engine producing 88 hp, later modified to a 2.0 L fuel-injected engine with a slightly lower output. In 1985, a 2.8 L V6 option was introduced, becoming standard in 1987. Transmissions varied from a 4-speed manual, a 5-speed version, or an optional 3-speed automatic for four-cylinder models, while the V6 was paired exclusively with the 3-speed automatic. Built on the front-wheel-drive GM J platform, the Cimarron used unibody construction and featured front MacPherson struts with a torsion-beam rear axle, alongside front and rear stabilizer bars. Its design received annual updates until 1988. A special D'Oro package offered in 1984 and 1985 added unique gold accents to the exterior and interior, initially available with a black exterior and tan leather interior, but expanded in 1985 to include white and red exterior options. The Cadillac Cimarron represents a significant period in Cadillac's history when it sought to compete directly with European luxury compacts.
